Alonso and Trulli Steal the Show at Monte Carlo
Schumacher's Title Hopes Fade After Tunnel Crash
In a thrilling and dramatic Monaco Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso and Jarno Trulli put on a stunning performance to challenge the dominance of Ferrari's Michael Schumacher. Ralf Schumacher was being lapped and he baited Alonso to pass him on the outside of the corner in the tunnel where there's just no overtaking space in normal circumstances.
The safety car had pulled back into the pits, and Trulli promptly drove three fastest laps in a row, setting up a thrilling battle for the lead. Alonso and Trulli traded the lead several times, with Alonso ultimately emerging victorious.
Schumacher's hopes of a sixth straight victory were dashed when he crashed heavily in the tunnel. The crash brought out the safety car again, and the race resumed with just a few laps remaining. Alonso and Trulli held their positions to finish one-two, with Schumacher salvaging third place.
The result was a major upset, and it has thrown the Formula One championship race wide open. Alonso now leads the standings by just three points over Schumacher, with Trulli in third place.
