Carapaz Claims Solo Victory on Stage 17 of Tour de France

Olympic Champion Breaks Away in Superdévoluy

Richard Carapaz of EF Education-EasyPost triumphed in Stage 17 of the 2024 Tour de France, crossing the finish line alone in Superdévoluy. The Ecuadorean rider's victory marks the first stage win of the Grand Boucle for the Tokyo Olympic road race champion.

Collision with Enric Mas

The stage was marked by a unfortunate collision between Carapaz and Enric Mas of Movistar, which ended both riders' overall aspirations for this year's race. The incident occurred on a treacherous descent, with Carapaz sustaining injuries but managing to continue.

Carapaz Joins Yates in Front

After the crash, Carapaz regrouped and joined a group of riders that included Simon Yates. The two riders attacked on the Col de Vars, eventually distancing themselves from the peloton. Yates and Carapaz remained together towards the final climb of La Lusette, but Carapaz unleashed a devastating attack in the final kilometers.

A Historic Achievement

Carapaz's solo victory is a testament to his determination and resilience. Not only is it the first stage win for Ecuador in the Tour de France, but it also makes him the first Ecuadorean to wear the yellow jersey. This historic achievement solidifies Carapaz's place among the world's elite cyclists.

The Tour de France continues with Stage 18 on Thursday, where riders will face another challenging mountain stage.
